Essential Oils Vs. Fragrances

Here is information regarding all of our scents and fragrances, and the differences between them for those who need to know and wish to know!
The terms "fragrances" and "essential oils" often come up in the context of perfumes, candles, and personal care products, but they refer to different things with distinct properties and uses.
Essential Oils
Definition: Essential oils are concentrated plant extracts obtained through methods such as steam distillation, cold pressing, or solvent extraction.
Composition: They are made up of natural compounds from the plant, which can include terpenes, aldehydes, phenols, and more. These compounds give essential oils their characteristic scents and therapeutic properties.
Uses: Essential oils are used in aromatherapy, natural perfumery, personal care products, and in some cases, for medicinal purposes. They are prized for their natural origin and potential health benefits.
Examples: Lavender oil, tea tree oil, eucalyptus oil, and peppermint oil.
Properties:
- Natural origin: Derived from plants.
- Therapeutic benefits: Used in aromatherapy for their potential health benefits.
- Complex scents: Often have a rich, multi-dimensional fragrance due to the complex mix of compounds. This can change over time and makes for more difficulty in consistent scents for products.
Fragrance Oils
Definition: Fragrances are synthetic or natural aromatic compounds created specifically to provide a pleasant smell.
Composition: They can be made from essential oils, synthetic aroma chemicals, or a combination of both. Synthetic fragrances are often created in laboratories and can mimic the scents of natural materials.
Uses: Fragrances are used in perfumes, colognes, candles, soaps, lotions, and a wide range of household products to impart a pleasant scent.
Examples: Vanilla fragrance, ocean breeze fragrance, sandalwood fragrance.
Properties:
- Synthetic and/or natural: Can be entirely synthetic, entirely natural, or a blend of both.
- Consistency: Scent profiles are consistent and can be tailored precisely.
- No therapeutic benefits: Unlike essential oils, synthetic fragrances are not used for their health benefits, but they are more consistent with their scents and rarely change batch to batch for products.
Key Differences
1. Origin: Essential oils are purely natural, derived from plants, while fragrances can be synthetic, natural, or a blend.
2. Complexity: Essential oils have complex, multifaceted aromas due to the natural compounds they contain, while fragrances can be engineered for specific, consistent scents.
3. Uses: Essential oils are often used for their therapeutic properties in addition to their scents, while fragrances are used primarily to impart pleasant smells.
4. Health and Safety: Essential oils can cause allergic reactions or sensitivities in some people, especially if not used properly. Fragrances, especially synthetic ones, can also cause allergic reactions and sensitivities.
However, synthetic fragrances sometimes contain compounds that are not found in nature and can be more irritating to some people.
In Our Products
Given our focus on eco-friendly and natural products, essential oils ONLY are used in our body care products such as: Bath Bombs, Bath Salts, etc. This best aligns with our brand's values around being ecologically friendly and earth-conscious.
However, as we want to create specific, consistent scents that can't be achieved with essential oils alone in our candles and wax melts, we ARE using fragrance oils or a blend of natural essential oils and synthetic fragrances with our CANDLES and MELTS.
